How did Father’s Day start anyway?

Father’s Day is a special day to recognise and celebrate the role fathers play in our life. Whether it is your Dad, step-dad, foster dad or just a special father figure who has helped you along the way, Father’s Day is your chance to say ‘Thank You’.
The history of Father’s Day dates back to the early 1900’s, and was partly inspired by the unofficial Mothers Day services which began in 1908. These Mother’s Day services prompted many people to arrange similar services to recognise fathers. While many services were arranged in the next couple of years, the most widely noted was organised in Washington, by Mrs Sonora Dodd. Mrs Dodd wanted to pay tribute to her late father, William Smart, who became a single parent when her mother died in childbirth. William Smart raised 6 children on his own, which was an unusual feat at that time. Originally Mrs Dodd wanted to hold the memorial service on the anniversary of her father’s death, June 5th 1910, however this did not leave organisers enough time to prepare a service. Instead the service was arranged to be held on the June 19th, and this has became known as the first Fathers Day.
While services continued every year, it was not until 1924 that President Coolidge recommended Father’s Day as a national holiday. It took 48 years from that recommendation, before Father’s Day was officially recognised by President Nixon in 1972.
When is Father’s Day celebrated?
Most countries follow the United States tradition and celebrate Father’s Day on the 3rd Sunday in June like here in Holland. Other cultures around the world coincide Father’s Day with other celebrations in their community. In Germany it is celebrated on Ascension Day (40 days after Easter), in the Roman Catholic tradition it is St Josephs Day (March 19), and in Thailand it is the kings birthday (December 5).
How is Father’s Day celebrated?
Father’s Day around the world is a chance for sons and daughters to pay tribute to their Dads. While for most countries there are no set traditions, it often involves a nice meal, presents, and a chance for Dad to put their feet up. In Germany, Dads take part in a Father’s Day hike. Groups of men hike into the forest dragging a wagon full of wine or beer, and local foods. On reaching their destination they have a Father’s Day feast.

Hoe is Vaderdag eigenlijk ontstaan?
Vaderdag wordt sinds de jaren zestig in Nederland gevierd. In Nederland wordt Vaderdag gehouden op de derde zondag in juni. Vaak krijgt vader op Vaderdag van zijn kinderen ontbijt op bed zoals hij dat graag wil, met koffie en als het even kan een gebakken eitje. Op deze dag mag vader eens lekker uitrusten van al dat harde werken. Ook geven de (kleinere) kinderen meestal knutselwerkjes, die zij op het kinderdagverblijf of op school voor hun vader hebben gemaakt. Verder krijgt hij natuurlijk de typische mannencadeaus van de wat oudere kinderen. Na een welverdiend ontbijtje op bed trekt de familie er vaak gezellig op uit. De vader wordt dan door zijn kinderen de gehele dag in het zonnetje gezet.
Vaderdag is ontstaan uit de behoefte om vaders te vereren.
De reden hiervoor was dat de 27-jarige Sonora zich begon te realiseren welke opofferingen haar alleenstaande vader had moeten maken om haar en haar vijf broers en zussen te laten opgroeien. Toen Sonora 16-jaar was stierf haar moeder bij de geboorte van haar kleinste zusje. Haar vader, William Jackson Smart, een veteraan uit de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog, voedde Sonora en haar broers en zussen op een boerderij in het oosten van de staat Washington in zijn eentje op, inclusief de nieuwste spruit. Sonora bewonderde haar vader daar enorm om en vond dat als er een moederdag was er ook een Vaderdag moest zijn.
Oprichter van de feestdag
De conservatieve stadsgenoten lachten Sonora uit om haar idee: ‘a national fishing day would be better’, volgens de locale krant ‘The Spokesman-Review’. Maar ze zette door en begon een serieuze lobby campagne om een officiële Vaderdag erkend te krijgen. Haar harde werken begon vruchten af te werpen toen op 19 juni 1910 in Spokane (Washington), haar woonplaats, de eerste Vaderdag werd gevierd. Dit mede dankzij de hulp van de Spokane Ministerial Association en de locale Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). Sonora wilde het liefst dat Vaderdag zou worden gevierd op 5 juni, de geboortedag van haar vader. Maar er was enig tijdgebrek om het de eerste keer te organiseren waardoor de eerste viering werd verschoven naar de derde zondag in juni.
Geschiedenis begon met vaststellen officiële feestdag
Het idee om Vaderdag te vieren werd in korte tijd vrij populair in Amerika. En wel zo populair dat in 1916 de toenmalige president van de United States, Calvin Coolidge, het evenement ondersteunde. In 1926 werd er een National Father’s Day Committee geformeerd in New York. Vervolgens was het president Lyndon Johnson die via een officiële ‘Presidential Procalmation’ de derde zondag in juni als Vaderdag erkende. Maar het was nog te vroeg voor een echte officiële Amerikaanse feestdag. Het toenmalige geheel uit mannen bestaande Amerikaanse congres vond het maar niks dat er een feestdag zou komen die mannen zo in het zonnetje moest zetten. Pas in 1972 maakte president Richard Nixon Vaderdag op de derde zondag van juni een officiële Amerikaanse feestdag.
